Safety Plan

Weather Contingency Safety Plan

The Race Directors of the Lake Orion Challenge have many years experience dealing with inclement weather and making the correct decisions when it comes to athlete, spectator and volunteer safety.
We will host the race under most weather conditions: rain or shine. In the case of inclement weather (severe winds, lightning, heavy rain, etc), Acts of God, or unforeseen circumstances the Race Director reserves the right to delay, adjust or cancel the race for the safety of all participants, volunteers, and spectators. This protocol is in place according to USAT recommendations. The Race Director shall consult with local safety officials and USAT officials regarding this decision.

Every effort will be made to conduct the race; if the race is cancelled there will be no refunds. This position is consistent with the protocol of sharing the risks associated with the sport of triathlon. Each athlete must accept any such risk for their entry fee paid including other amenities paid for such as t-shirts, insurance and online administrative fees. All fees collected are used to develop and produce the event.

In the event severe weather conditions or other circumstances alter the race start, the decision will be posted at the event, on the event website and/or social media channels (FB page and groups) and communicated at the race venue via the PA announcing system.

In the event of unsafe paddle conditions, the event will be changed to a duathlon. All racers will be shuttled to the transition area and the postponed start will go according to their start wave they were assigned. If we feel the water conditions are not in favor of the event swim, we will cancel the swim without question!

A duathlon would start at Transition and follow the planned cycling and running course. If the weather persists (or is bad enough from the beginning) the event may be reduced to a simple run, or cancelled all together. Remember that in addition to safety we have a strict timeline approved by many municipalities and we cannot deviate from that too much without losing our permissions to have the event, thus leading to an overall cancelation. This is NOT what we want and we will also do everything in our power to have the event for our customers.
